The Journey of Nauroti Devi as the Sarpanch to Empower Women and Ensure Proper Social Reformation Across India
India is continuously struggling to obtain equal rights to all the sections of our society. In search of independence and self-reliance, women have crossed several milestones by overcoming social reformation. Social reformation has played a vital role in making the women of today’s world. It is an expression of power and compassion like goddess Shailaputri. Words like courage and strength tend to portray one such woman, Nauroti Devi. She is the epitome of sheer determination who has worked tremendously hard to achieve prosperity, not for herself but her community. She inspires other women to discover their inner strength and be successful in life.
Dark days tend to carve out the quality of any person. So that it can get reflected outside in a better way. It seems to be right in the case of Nauroti Devi. Born in the Kishangarh district of Rajasthan, Nauroti Devi had to deal with poverty every day. To earn a living, she used to cut stones at a construction site. It was not just a physically challenging job, but it was also mentally exhausting.
Despite facing so much turmoil at work, Nauroti Devi never received the entire daily wage. There was a vast difference in wages for both genders. For men, it was INR 7 whereas for women it was just INR 4. Women usually were told that the difference in wages was due to their lack of skills in doing the work.
It was unfair to the hard work put by Nauroti Devi during her early days. She decided to revolt against the evils of discrimination for the women in the society. She began to raise her voice to motivate the workers to fight for equal rights and stand against gender discrimination. Gradually, she began to acknowledge the leadership qualities inside her as she drove all the women to join her.
Later, she got assistance in her social reformation struggle from an NGO, who helped her to reach the Supreme Court to get justice ultimately. These struggles turned out to be fruitful when she acquired the position of Sarpanch Gram Panchayat of the Village Harmad.
Holding the Power of Sarpanch
Being a Sarpanch, Nauroti Devi proved that no one but she could handle the responsibility of being the head of Gram Panchayat of the village. Knowing the importance of education, she enrolled in the Barefoot College Tilonia for a literacy program of 6 months. Her dedication is the result of her ability on how to read and write and then found a position in the college to earn her living. The thirst to know more has inspired her to learn how to work on a computer. She immersed herself deep into the ocean of learning. Her determination has proved to enhance her leadership skills and knowledge to a great extent. Since she is a quick learner, everything automatically puts into place.
Soon, she began to inspire other women to come out strong-headed against those who try to curb the social reformation activities. The people of the community started to get notification by her name. It is about all the positive transformations that are taking place in and around the village. When she became the authoritative person of the community, she started a mission to develop the area by constructing several essential amenities like hand pumps, drinking water, reservoirs, lavatories as well as places to live for poor. Not only just that, but she is also against those who sell alcohol through illegal activities. Proper sanitation measures begin to improve the health and life of people from several villages.
Despite the power, Nauroti Devi remained true to her position as a sarpanch. She was always grounded. Also, she gracefully completed her tenure with the gram Panchayat and gave 13 lakh rupees to the panchayat so that they can provide more facilities to the villagers.
She was willing to help the village. It shows how she overcame all the hurdles and brought the best of her position.
Additional Social Reformation Activities by Nauroti Devi
Nauroti Devi started to work as a “Saathin” for women empowerment. Her motivational speeches begin to instigate the females to speak out loud and attain their self-esteem and confidence. She met people from different regions of Rajasthan. Then, she spreads her words by letting them know how she fought for her necessary privileges and won over the evils of society. As a mentor, she taught maths and Hindi and trained them to attain several skills.
Being a part of a socially active group named, “Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan”, Nauroti Devi educated the community about the Right to Information. Because of her constant demand from 1981, the government finally passed the RTI Act 2005to make the low wagered section aware of their rights.
Continued to Be Courageous and Powerful
In 2015, Nauroti Devi filed a case in the High Court to allow her to take part in the village panchayat elections despite being less educated. The journey of her life is well-known in several nations. She went on to motivate people around the world by giving speeches about women empowerment in Germany, the USA, as well as China.
