A Guide to One of the Oldest Ministries in India
One of the most important ministries within the Government of India in the Ministry of Labour and Employment. It also happens to be one of the oldest ministries in the country.
What the Ministry of Labour and Employment in India Does
As India’s federal ministry, the department is responsible for the following areas:
- The protection and safeguarding of the worker’s Interest
- The creation of a work environment that is healthy enough for greater productivity
- To coordinate and develop vocational skills training and employment.
- Oversees labour legislation and policy
- Ensure social security of labour
- Oversees policies related to special groups like women and child labour
- Oversee employment and labour statistics
- Manage industrial relations
- Manage the enforcement of labour laws within the Central sphere
- Arbitrate industrial disputes through the Central Government Industrial Tribunals cum Labour Courts and
- National Industrial Tribunals
- Oversee workers education
As of 9 November 2014, however, skills related responsibilities were moved to the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.
National Career Service Portal
The National Career Service Portal was launched by the Ministry on 20 July 2015. The aim of the Ministry was to help bridge the gap between job seekers and job providers.
